How it Began...
The first CPC in Steuben County was started in 1985 by Mike and Angie Colacouri. They first provided services in their home, and then moved into an office facility. Mike and Karen Erenst took it over and ran it out of their home until 1999. In the fall of 1999, Karen Ernst contacted Lake Missionary Church to see if they would like to continue the work of the Angola CPC, which was now near closing. Roxanne Thompson, a member of that church, felt led to contact Mark and Karen. Roxanne had “never done anything like this before” but in January 1999 she felt led along with her pastor and several members of the church to pursue taking over the CPC.

Within a remarkably short period of time prayers began to be answered. A steering committee made up of people from Lake Missionary and other surrounding churches met over a period of time and major needs for the success of this new CPC began to be met. Larry Givens donated 2,500 square feet of office space in his building south of Orland. Dawn McCreery an experienced former Director of another CPC felt called to help run this new venture and was hired as the part-time Executive Director.

Many volunteers (over 75 individuals) helped prepare the facility providing physical labor, supplies, and planning necessary to get the underpinnings of this new organization in place. God also provided a major and unexpected source of funding from a private foundation in Indiana. A volunteer training was held the summer of 2000, a Board of Directors was formed, and we became incorporated in September of 2000.

With people ready to serve and so many other things coming together the Center was able to open October 16, 2000 and we received our 501 (c)(3), not-for-profit status in January, 2001. In August of 2001, the Center partnered with the Indiana Corporation for National Service AmeriCorps*VISTA program and hired its first, full-time staff person, Rebecca Tice. VISTA assisted with building infrastructure, developing programs, and recruiting volunteers, the Center then increased its hours serving clients Monday-Friday from 10-4. As programs grew and client services expanded, more funding was found through local foundations, grants, and churches. Community partnerships were formed through presentations and meetings.

Through a local community foundation major grant, the Baby Shower program began in May of 2002, bringing more clients to the Center than ever before. With more staff, the Center could focus on building support in the community through fundraisers and events. Concerts were held, as well as community breakfasts, trainings, and church presentations. The abstinence program was expanded, and an Abstinence Outreach Coordinator, was hired as a part-time staff person. A new program was developed which is a community abstinence outreach VIP (Values, Integrity, and Purity) program, and is currently directed by Matt Gingerich. At this time one of our volunteer consultants Julie Brown began developing a ministry to reach those who have been wounded by abortion which is now our Precious Grace ministry and offers healing support group meetings twice a year. Tammi McCoy took this position in the fall of 2009.

The Center however saw its greatest challenge in 2004 when, in order to better serve the community, it moved to two locations one in Angola and one in LaGrange. During that expansion the organization was restructured and several changes were made.

Our current staff includes: Mari Bowers, Executive Director; Melisa Lewton, LaGrange Director; Sabrina White, Angola Director and Jessica Compton, Administrative Assistant.

Angola is currently open to clients Tuesday 10-7pm, Wednesday 10-4 pm and Thursday 10-4 pm LaGrange is open to clients Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10-4 pm.
